Basic health information for travelers to Benin

• Malaria is present year round throughout the entire country and all travellers are strongly advised to take extreme care to avoid any potential risk of infection. Weekly doses of mefloquine are advised to help combat the disease which is passed via bites from mosquitoes. Additional safety precautions include obtaining plenty of insect repellent and close fitting clothing for protection. If infected, all visitors should immediately seek out emergency medical assistance before serious symptoms develop.

• Additional insect based diseases that have been encountered throughout Benin include Dengue and Chikungunya Fever and any visitor to the region should exercise extreme caution to prevent any risk of contamination and should consider a full medical evaluation upon returning to your country of origin.

• Hepatitis B is endemic to the region and all visitors should take great care when dealing with bloody or infected regions or when engaging in sexual activity throughout your visit.

• Rabies maybe present in the bites of rapid dogs or other wild animals and all travellers bitten should immediately seek out emergency medical assistance before serious symptoms develop.

• It is always recommended to keep a certificate of vaccination against Yellow Fever when one has travelled to countries with infected areas.
